Is coaching and consulting like psychotherapy?
No. Coaching and consulting are powerful, interpersonal relationships in which I assist clients in designing their future rather than trying to help them overcome their past. Although the work we do together may feel therapeutic, it is not, by definition or intention, a psychotherapeutic intervention. Specifically, I do not diagnose mental health disorders as defined by the American Psychiatric Association. The services I provide do not prevent, cure, or treat any mental disorders or medical diseases, and coaching and consulting services are not substitutes for psychotherapeutic interventions.
What type of client are coaching and consulting services appropriate for?
Coaching and consulting services are designed for individuals who are emotionally and psychologically well and who want to define and clarify their goals in life, and then make the changes necessary to move forward in any or all aspects of their lives in order to achieve those goals.
Typical goals for adults include wanting to develop a happier, healthier relationship with a spouse or romantic partner; gaining more confidence as a parent, including developing appropriate discipline techniques, communication strategies, and overcoming parenting challenges; dealing with divorce and how to move on; pursuing success in business; discovering more social connections with others; improving social and emotional skills; managing anxiety and stress; learning to solve any type of problem effectively; coping with disappointment, fear, or rejection; understanding trauma and how to begin healing; identifying and achieving academic goals; learning how to interact with others more professionally and successfully; practicing self-care for optimal health and wellness; getting healthy through weight management, an awareness of emotional triggers, and identifying healthy choices; coping with religious and spiritual challenges; and learning to embrace your authentic life so that you can be who you truly are - and thrive.
Typical goals for children include learning how to successfully interact with peers and family members; how to identify feelings and manage them successfully; gaining social and emotional skills and practicing them through role playing; coping with any kind of loss; addressing all types of bullying behaviors and how to avoid becoming a victim; developing strategies for academic success; learning how to recognize appropriate friendships and healthy relationships; developing strategies for communicating effectively with others; learning self-care practices to help mitigate stress and anxiety; gaining the skills needed to feel empowered, authentic, and proud; and learning how to thrive in a complex and challenging world.
Do you guarantee success?
Coaching and consulting are comprehensive processes that involve interactions between the professional coach/consultant and the client. By entering into a professional agreement for coaching or consulting services, the client acknowledges that they want to make progress in some or all areas of their lives and they understand that they are solely responsible for making the changes that they determine are necessary to achieve forward progress in pursuit of their goals. Each client will move through the coaching/consulting process at a rate which is comfortable and appropriate for them, with the understanding that coaching or consulting services may not create immediate changes in the client's life. Importantly, clients are solely responsible for creating and implementing their own physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Clients are responsible for their own decisions, choices, actions, and results arising out of the coaching/consulting relationship and their interactions with their coach/client.
Does coaching/consulting actually make a difference?
Existing and emerging empirical research continues to support the efficacy of coaching/consulting as meaningful pathways to effective change for clients.
What's the difference between a therapist, a coach, and a consultant?
The simplest and best explanation I've ever found between these three types of services was provided by life coach Julie Cusmariu. During an interview she was asked this question, and she said, "A therapist is like an archaeologist who delves into the past to reveal wounds and to facilitate healing. A consultant is more like a teacher – an expert in a specialized field one can seek out for advice – while a coach is similar to an architect, called upon to examine an existing structure and to achieve improvements, congruent with future goals."
Do you accept clients who also see licensed mental health professionals?
Yes. Because mental health professionals and coaches focus on different aspects of their clients' lives, there is no conflict between seeing a licensed mental health professional and a professional life coach.
Do you refer clients to licensed mental health professionals, if necessary?
While I do not provide any specific referral services for my clients to other licensed mental health professionals, I can offer suggestions as to where the client might look to find an appropriate provider for their mental health needs.
How are your coaching/consulting services provided?
Because of Covid-19, coaching and individual consulting services are currently being provided virtually (through Zoom) or by phone to protect the health and safety of my clients. In person SEL consulting and facilitation services are only being provided for school districts or other private academic institutions who are currently in session, and who follow the mandated guidelines for reducing the spread of Covid-19.
What kind of clients do you work with?
I provide services for individuals, couples, families, children, organizations and educational institutions.
What is the best way to select a coach or consultant?
Every coach/consultant approaches the coaching/consulting relationship with a different style of interaction that is unique to them. It is essential that you understand the coach's/consultant's approach to determine whether it will be a good fit for you. Coaching/consulting is based on an interactive relationship between the coach/consultant and the client, and because the coaching/consulting process often tends to be comprehensive, it may involve the client sharing whatever information they choose to share about their life, work, finances, health, relationships, religious or spiritual beliefs, education, and activities, which will help them define and clarify their goals and develop a strategy for achieving them. Therefore, each client should feel comfortable with their practitioner to elevate the likelihood of forming a successful partnership and working relationship. You can find out more about my specific approach to coaching and consulting by clicking on the MY APPROACH link at the top or bottom of this website.
Is it okay to ask questions about the coaching/consulting processes?
Absolutely! Every client has the right to ask as many questions as they need to so that they feel comfortable and appropriately informed about exactly what services are provided and what they can expect if they decide to enter into a coaching relationship or consulting agreement.
Do you offer a free phone consultation for prospective clients?
Of course! I offer one free 20 minute phone consultation to all prospective clients so that I can begin to address any questions that they may have about the services I provide. I believe in maintaining complete transparency throughout all phases of my coaching/consulting services so that my clients can make well-informed decisions before entering into a client agreement with me.
How much do you charge?
My current session fee for individuals is $120 for a 60 minute session. For couples, my session fee is $160 per session; and for families, my session fees start at $200 per session. Fees must be paid in advance of each session and all fees are non-refundable. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, or by check, if arrangements are made with me and received by me prior to the scheduled session.
What are your hours and availability?
I recognize the diversity of my clients' schedules and try to remain as flexible as possible so that I can accommodate my clients' availability. We can discuss scheduling in more detail if you feel like I may be the right coach or consultant for you.
Do you accept insurance?
No. I do not accept any form of insurance, however, if you are experiencing financial hardship due to Covid-19, I may be able to provide services on a sliding scale, at my discretion, for a limited period of time.
Do you keep the information your clients share with you confidential?
The coaching/consulting relationship is built on trust. I agree to keep all information about our conversations private and confidential, except where disclosures are required by law. These confidentiality exceptions are noted in my Client Services Agreement, and we will discuss them during our first session to ensure that you understand them.
Can a client terminate coaching or consulting services?
Clients have the right to discontinue services with me at any time, with prior written notice received by me at least 24 hours before their next scheduled session. I also reserve the right to terminate services with a client for any reason. However, my goal is for us to work together compatibly and successfully so that you can achieve your life's goals! I strive to provide the highest levels of client-centered care so that you feel heard and supported throughout the coaching/consulting process.
Do you have an anti-discrimination policy?
Yes. I do not discriminate against clients based on race, ethnicity, culture, age, sex, sexual orientation, health status, physical ability, religious or spiritual beliefs, the absence of religious or spiritual beliefs, veteran status, place of residence, social or economic status, marital or family status, or gender identification. I take all ethically appropriate steps necessary to advance, support, and celebrate the values of equal opportunity, human dignity, and racial/ethnic/cultural diversity. I advocate on behalf of the rights, lifestyles, and agency of all individuals, and I proudly support the unique personhood of each of my clients.
Are the quotes you use on your web sites written by you?
No. All the quotes used throughout all of my web sites were written by some amazing, talented, and visionary people! I can happily share citations for anyone who may be interested in learning who said what!
